
Mohammad Jamal Barout, a Syrian writer, historian, and researcher, was born in the village of Deir Hafer, east of Aleppo. He specializes in modern Syrian social and political history. He has worked as a director and consultant on several projects for the United Nations Development Programme in Syria and currently works as a research associate at the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies in Doha. He has published numerous studies and research papers on education, development, population, and Syrian emigration. His most recent books include: *The Last Decade in Syrian History: The Dialectic of Stagnation and Reform* and *The Modern Historical Formation of the Syrian Jazira*.
